How to Protect Your Saudi Home from Dust Storms: Complete Guide

Dust storms (haboob) are a regular and potentially severe weather event across much of Saudi Arabia, particularly in central and western regions. A major haboob can cause structural wind damage, infiltrate homes with fine sand particles, clog AC systems, and deposit heavy dust loads across all surfaces. Proper preparation dramatically reduces the impact.

Structural Protection from Dust Storms

  • Ensure all external doors and windows are properly sealed and latch securely

  • Install quality weatherstripping on all external doors and operable windows

  • Cover or secure loose objects in gardens, on terraces, and rooftops before storms

  • Protect AC outdoor units with covers or louvred screens that allow airflow but block sand

After a Dust Storm: Recovery Checklist

  • Clean AC filters immediately — dust loading causes overheating and compressor failure

  • Clean AC condenser coil (outdoor unit) with a gentle wash

  • Inspect roof for accumulated sand load (heavy sand deposits can stress older roof structures)

  • Check roof drain outlets for sand blockage before the next rain event

Sealing products (weatherstripping, door bottom seals, PU foam sealant) for dust storm protection are available from Benna's construction marketplace.
