Sandpaper Types and Grit Guide for Better DIY Projects

A good paint job, smooth tabletop, or tight-fitting repair often comes down to one simple tool: the right sandpaper. Pick a grit that is too rough and you leave scratches that show through the finish. Pick one that is too fine and the work takes forever.


Sandpaper looks simple, but the choices matter. The abrasive material, backing, shape, and grit all affect how it cuts. Once you understand those basics, sanding becomes faster, cleaner, and more predictable.

Sandpaper comes in more than one type


Most DIY projects use sandpaper to remove material, smooth a surface, or prepare it for paint, stain, glue, or finish. The “sand” is usually not sand at all. It is a manufactured abrasive fixed to paper, cloth, film, or foam.

The backing matters too. Paper-backed sheets are fine for hand sanding. Cloth-backed belts handle heat and pressure better. Foam sanding sponges conform to curves, trim, and profiles. Hook-and-loop discs make quick work with random orbital sanders.


For general DIY, keep these on hand:


  • Aluminum oxide sheets in several grits

  • Sanding sponges for corners and curved trim

  • Hook-and-loop discs if using a random orbital sander

  • Wet/dry silicon carbide paper for fine finishing and polishing


Grit controls how fast and how smooth the cut feels


Grit numbers tell you how coarse or fine the abrasive is. Lower numbers are rougher and remove more material. Higher numbers are finer and leave a smoother surface.


Think of sanding as a series of steps. Coarse grits shape or strip. Medium grits smooth. Fine grits prepare for finish.

Do not jump too far between grits. If you start at 80, move to 120, then 180 or 220. Skipping straight from 80 to 220 often leaves deep scratches that the finer grit cannot erase quickly.


A good rule for woodworking: stop sanding when the surface is smooth enough for the finish, not when the number looks impressive.

For paint, 120 to 180 grit usually gives enough grip without leaving obvious scratches. For stained wood, 180 or 220 grit is often a better final step because stain can highlight sanding marks. For removing old finish, start lower, then work up.

Choose the right sandpaper for the project


Different projects need different levels of abrasion. The right choice saves time and protects the surface.


For bare wood furniture, start with 80 or 100 grit only if the wood is rough or uneven. Move to 120, then 180 or 220 before finishing. Always sand with the grain by hand to reduce visible scratches.


For painted trim, use 120 to 180 grit to dull glossy paint and smooth rough spots. If paint is peeling, use 80 or 100 grit on damaged areas, then feather the edges with 150 or 180 grit.


For drywall patches, use 150 to 220 grit or a fine sanding sponge. Press lightly. Heavy pressure can tear the paper face of the drywall and create more repair work.


For metal, use aluminum oxide or silicon carbide. Start around 80 to 120 grit for rust or burrs, then move finer if the surface will be painted or polished.


For plastic, go gently. Use finer grits, often 220 and up, because coarse paper can gouge or melt the surface if used with too much speed.


For between coats of finish, use 320 or 400 grit by hand. The goal is not to remove the finish. The goal is to knock down dust nibs and give the next coat a smooth base.


Better sanding technique starts with control


Good technique is not about pushing harder. It is about using the paper evenly and letting the abrasive do the work.


Use a sanding block on flat surfaces. Your fingers create uneven pressure, which can leave grooves. A block spreads pressure and keeps edges crisp.


Sand with the grain on wood when hand-sanding. Cross-grain scratches can show after stain or clear finish. With a random orbital sander, keep the tool moving slowly and evenly. Do not tilt it onto one edge.


Change paper when it stops cutting. Clogged or worn sandpaper creates heat, smears finish, and wastes time. If the dust turns gummy, the paper is likely loaded with paint, resin, or finish.


Vacuum or wipe between grits. Dust from a coarser grit can scratch the surface during the next pass. A shop vacuum, tack cloth, or slightly damp microfiber cloth works well, depending on the project.

Safety and common mistakes to avoid


Sanding makes dust, and some dust is harmful. Wear a dust mask or respirator, especially when sanding paint, hardwood, MDF, drywall compound, or finishes. Use eye protection when working overhead or with power tools. Hearing protection helps when using loud sanders for long sessions.


Work in a ventilated area and use dust collection when possible. If old paint may contain lead, do not dry sand it. Follow local safety guidance or hire a qualified professional.


Common sanding mistakes include:


  • Starting too fine


Fine paper cannot quickly flatten rough areas. Start coarse enough to do the job, then refine the surface.


  • Pressing too hard


Extra pressure causes uneven scratches, heat buildup, and faster wear. Let the grit cut.


  • Skipping grits


Each grit should remove the scratches from the one before it.


  • Rounding sharp edges by accident


Be careful near corners and profiles. Use light pressure and a block when you need crisp lines.


  • Using old, clogged paper


Fresh sandpaper is cheaper than fixing swirl marks, burns, or smeared finish.

Start with the least aggressive grit that still removes the problem, move through the grits in order, and keep the surface clean as you go.
