Understanding Tile Adhesive Classifications (EN 12004)

• C1: Cementitious adhesive, basic classification - for interior wall tiles only in Saudi conditions

• C2: Improved cementitious adhesive with higher bond strength - minimum for all Saudi floor tiles

• C2 S1: Flexible improved adhesive - for heated substrates, external tiles, and large-format tiles

• C2 S2: Highly flexible adhesive - for swimming pools, rooftop terraces, and under-floor heating

Saudi Arabia Tile Adhesive Recommendations by Application

Interior floor tiles (residential): C2 minimum. Exterior floor tiles, terraces, balconies: C2 S1 flexible. Large-format tiles (>60x60cm): C2 S1 or C2 S2. Wet area tiles (bathrooms, showers): C2 S1 over waterproofing membrane. Rooftop terraces: C2 S2 highly flexible. Swimming pools: C2 S2 frost-resistant.

Grout Selection for Saudi Conditions

Cement grout (CG1/CG2 to EN 13888): Suitable for most interior applications. Flexible grout with improved resistance: For exteriors and wet areas. Epoxy grout (RG to EN 13888): For swimming pools, chemical exposure, and premium wet rooms. Epoxy grout is stain-resistant and waterproof but requires skilled application. Grout joint width affects selection—wide joints require sanded grout.
