DIY Painting Guide for Saudi Homes: How to Paint Walls and Exteriors Like a Professional

Repainting is one of the most transformative and cost-effective home improvements you can make. In Saudi Arabia's harsh climate, exterior paint especially requires careful preparation and the right product selection. This guide provides a complete walkthrough for painting projects in KSA.

Choosing the Right Paint for Saudi Arabia's Climate

Exterior Paint

Saudi Arabia's exterior surfaces endure UV radiation, sandstorms, and extreme temperature cycles. Use 100% acrylic exterior paint with UV protection. Jotun Jotashield and Dulux Weathershield are popular choices specifically formulated for Middle East conditions.

Interior Paint

Interior walls need washable emulsion paints for high-traffic areas (living rooms, corridors) and lower-VOC options for bedrooms. Matte finish for ceilings, eggshell or semi-gloss for walls that need wiping.

Surface Preparation Steps

• Clean surfaces thoroughly: remove dust, grease, and loose particles

• Fill cracks and holes with appropriate filler, sand smooth

• Apply alkali-resistant primer on new concrete or plaster surfaces

• Mask off areas not to be painted (windows, skirting boards, door frames)

Application Tips for Best Results

• Paint during cooler hours (early morning or evening) to prevent rapid drying

• Apply two coats for full coverage, allowing proper drying time between coats

• Use a roller for large flat surfaces and a brush for cutting in at edges

• Never thin paint excessively — follow manufacturer's dilution recommendations
