Gypsum Board Types in Saudi Arabia: Fire-Resistant, Moisture-Resistant, and Standard Drywall Guide

Gypsum board (also known as drywall, plasterboard, or Gyp board) has become the dominant interior partitioning and ceiling material in Saudi Arabia. Its lightweight nature, fire resistance, and ease of installation make it ideal for the Kingdom's construction industry. This guide explains the different types and how to select the right one.

Types of Gypsum Boards Available in Saudi Arabia

Standard Gypsum Board

The most common type used for interior walls and ceilings in dry areas. Available in 12mm and 15mm thicknesses. Standard boards are identified by their gray or ivory-colored paper facing.

Moisture-Resistant (MR) Gypsum Board

Identified by a green paper facing, MR boards are treated to resist moisture and mold growth. Essential for bathroom walls, kitchen backsplash areas, and any rooms with potential moisture exposure. Mandatory for tile-backing applications in wet rooms.

Fire-Resistant (FR) Gypsum Board

Identified by a pink or red paper facing, FR boards contain glass fiber and other fire-retarding additives. Required for walls enclosing fire corridors, stairwells, fire-rated partitions, and areas requiring 30–60 minute fire resistance ratings. Widely mandated in Saudi building codes.

Acoustic Gypsum Board

Specially formulated with higher density and often used in double-layer configurations for sound-sensitive applications: meeting rooms, home theaters, bedrooms adjacent to noisy areas, and commercial offices.

Gypsum Board Selection Guide by Application

  • Bedroom and living room walls: Standard 12mm

  • Bathroom and kitchen walls: Moisture-resistant 12mm

  • Fire-rated walls and corridors: FR 15mm (double layer for 60-min rating)

  • Ceilings: Standard 12mm for most applications
